Alcea ficifolia

ζ*A. ficifolia L.

ζ*A. ficifolia L. ζ*,Antwerp hollyhock, is known in N.Z. from one recent collection only, established on a roadside, Ophir, C. Otago, 1958. It is similar to A. rosea in most respects but differing as follows: basal lvs deeply palmately 7-lobed to c. 3/4 of radius; lobes oblong, obtuse, crenate; stem lvs deeply 3-5-(7)-lobed. Corolla yellow to orange. This is a cultivated plant of uncertain origin and is sometimes included within a broader concept of A. rosea.  Webb, D. A., in Fl. Europ. 2 (1968), noted that this form is probably a hybrid involving A. rugosa. (Cultivated hybrid, 1981).
