Verrucaria fissa Taylor in Mack., Fl. hibern. 2: 95 (1836).

Thallus dark green-brown to grey, thin, ± smooth, areolate-cracked, spreading as dark stains on rock. Perithecia subcompound, immersed in slight, convex elevations in thallus, ostiole dark brown. Hymenial algae globose or cubic. Ascospores 2 per ascus, dark brown, ovate to ellipsoid, 35-50 × 15-25 µm.
