Vaccinium corymbosum
ζ*Vaccinium corymbosum L. ζ* has been recently collected wild around the Moanatuatua bog, Waikato. Plants are now widespread in the area and apparently spreading by seed. A deciduous, rhizomatous shrub, usually 1-2 m high; lvs to 8 × 5 cm, ovate, broadly-ovate or elliptic-ovate, entire or almost so; fls in dense corymbose cymes; corolla c. 7-8 mm long, ± urceolate or cylindric-urceolate, white; stamens included; fr. 1.2- c. 2 cm diam., berry-like, globose, black with a glaucous-white bloom, with sweet flesh and many tiny seeds. Cvs of V. corymbosa, highbush blueberries, are extensively grown in this area of the Waikato. The evergreen V. ashei Reade, rabbits eye blueberry is also cultivated and has been reported to be wild (P. de Lange, pers. comm.). (Eastern N. America, 1988).
