Hypogymnia subphysodes var. austerodioides

H. subphysodes var.austerodioides Elix, Brunonia 2 (2): 230 (1980) ["1979"].

Description : Flora (1985: 195).

N: South Auckland (Mangaotaki Valley Pio Pio), Taranaki (Mt Taranaki), Wellington (Ohakune, Ruahine Ra., Tararua Ra.). S: Westland (Greymouth, Franz Josef), Marlborough (Molesworth), Canterbury (Arthur's Pass, Springfield, Hanmer Springs, Kaituna Valley Banks Peninsula, Port Hills Christchurch, Peel Forest), Otago (Cameron Flat Makarora, Wanaka, Theatre Flats Rockburn, Flagstaff Hill, Mihiwaka, Mt Charles Otago Peninsula, Taieri Mouth, Waipori Gorge), Southland (Eglington Valley, Waikoau River Te Wae Wae Bay, Waihopai Scenic Reserve Invercargill, Greenhills near Bluff). St: (Wilson Bay Port Pegasus). On old stumps, twigs and/or bark of Betula pendula, Dacrycarpus dacrydioides, Dacrydium cupressinum, Griselinia littoralis, Leptospermum scoparium, Nothofagus, Quintinia acutifolia. Known also from Australia (Elix 1980, 1992; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Hypogymnia subphysodes var. austerodioides is characterised by: the corticolous habit; the presence of soredia, and often accompanying coralloid isidia; and the hollow, contiguous lobes. It lacks the discrete, elongated, sparsely branched marginal lobes that are so characteristic of var. subphysodes (q.v.).
