Hypogymnia turgidula

H. turgidula (Bitter) Elix, Brunonia 2 (2): 238 (1980) ["1979"].

Parmelia turgidula Bitter, Hedwigia 40: 246 (1901).

Holotype: New Zealand. Sine loco [probably Wellington], Charles Knight s.n., ex Herb. Lojkanum – W.

Description : Flora (1985: 196).

Chemistry : Cortex K+ yellow; medulla KC+ red, Pd−; containing; atranorin, chloroatranorin, physodic acid (major), 3-hydroxyphysodic acid, 2'- O- methylphysodic acid (minor) and alectoronic acid (tr.) (Elix 1992).

N: Hawke's Bay (Kuripapango – W. Colenso), Wellington (C. Knight). S: Canterbury (Arthur's Pass, Hanmer Springs, Waipara Gorge, Ashley Gorge, Mt Cook), Otago (Paradise Lake Wakatipu, Hampden, Whare Flat, Flagstaff Hill, Mt Cargill Dunedin, Waipori Gorge, Taieri Mouth). On bark (twigs and trunks) of Betula pendula, Dacrydium cupressinum, Leptospermum scoparium, Kunzea ericoides, Nothofagus fusca, N. solandri var. cliffortioides, s.l. to 600 m. Known also from Australia (Elix 1980, 1992; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Hypogymnia turgidula is characterised by: the corticolous habit; the regular thallus; the narrow, inflated, contiguous lobes; copious apothecia that lack swollen basal parts; and the medulla that is sometimes brownish adjacent to the lower cortex.
