Parmelia billardierei var. angustior. Holotype: New Zealand. Taranaki, Mount Egmont [Taranaki], on bark, i.1934, L.M. Cranwell ZA 207 – W. [abundant material in CHR (3 packets) "Lichens from Hall Libocedrus belt below Plateau Stratford Mtn Track, 18.i.1934, L.M. Cranwell H 12 – CHR 376036" – very probably isotype].
Description : Flora (1985: 194–195).
Chemistry : Cortex K+ yellow; medulla KC+ red, Pd± red; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, physodic acid (major), 3-hydroxyphysodic acid (minor), 2'- O- methylphysodic acid, alectoronic acid, physodalic acid and protocetraric acid (present or absent) (Elix 1992).

Known also from Australia and South America (Elix 1980, 1992; Galloway & Quilhot 1999; McCarthy 2003c, 2006) and recently from Oregon (McCune & Rosentreter 1997) and Thailand (Wolseley et al. 2002).

Hypogymnia subphysodes is characterised by: the corticolous habit; the presence of soredia; and the hollow, narrow (1.5 mm wide or less), elongated marginal and submarginal lobes.
