Tussock grassland.
The N.Z. plant has a somewhat shorter hypanthium than is typical of this subsp. (see, Nordberg, G., Op. Bot. (Lund) 16: 1-166 (1967)), but matches it in other characters. The hypanthium length is the same as that given for subsp. lasiocarpa by Cullen, J., in Fl. Turk. 4: 78 (1972). The N.Z. collection has been previously recorded as subsp. lateriflora.
