Atriplex halimus

ζ*A. halimus L.

ζ*A. halimus L. ζ*, saltbush, has spread to a limited extent on sand dunes on one area of the Manawatu coast and is ± naturalised. It is sometimes cultivated, especially as a drought- and salt-resistant plant for coastal areas, and has also been used for stabilising soils in dry areas of C. Otago. A bushy, monoecious shrub; main stems terete or slightly angular, to 1 m high; lf petiole < 1 cm long; lamina to 5 × 3 cm, rhombic-ovate, ovate, or elliptic-ovate, grey or silvery grey-farinose; infl. a narrow panicle with numerous glomerules of brownish fls in spaced cymes; bracteoles 3-4.5 mm wide, broadly reniform, entire or almost so, farinose, convex and lacking tubercles on back. (Mediterranean region, 1988).
