Description : Flora (1985: 35).

N: South Auckland (Bombay Hills, Rurima I.), Wellington. S: Canterbury. Probably widely distributed on bark of trees and shrubs in shaded, undisturbed, lowland habitats.

Endemic

Illustrations : Knight (1880: pl. XII, fig. 15 – as Bacidia spirospora; fig. 16 – as Bacidia melastegia; pl. XIII, fig. 28 – as Bacidia spodoelaeina; pl. XIII, fig. 31 – as Bacidia pannaroidea [the ascospore drawing in Knight (1880: pl. XIII, fig. 31B), is without septa, an oversight by the block-maker. Knight's drawing accompanying the holotype specimen has the septa clearly marked!].

Bacidia wellingtonii is characterised by: the corticolous habit; the pale olivaceous to fawnish yellow, areolate, minutely plicate, varnish-like to minutely roughened or papillate thallus, delimited by a narrow, black prothallus; sessile (occasionally subimmersed) to subpedicellate red-brown to brown-black apothecia; a granular blue-black epithecium; a massive yellow-brown hypothecium; and spirally curved, 10–18-septate ascospores, (50–)60–90 × (2–)3–4 μm.
