Calicium hyperelloides

Chemistry : Thallus K+ dull yellow, C+ orange, KC+ orange-red, Pd−, UV+ dark-orange; containing arthothelin, thuringione, thiophanic acid and two unidentified xanthones (Tibell 1987).
N: Northland (Te Huka Beach to Waiwera), South Auckland (Mt Moehau to Pureora Forest), Wellington (Turangi). On lignum of Agathis australis (kauri), Metrosideros excelsa (pohutukawa) and Nothofagus fusca and on bark of kauri, pohutukawa, Podocarpus totara, Rhopalostylis sapida and Vitex lucens. It has a wide altitudinal range from s.l. to 910 m. It is one of the few species of Caliciales to tolerate coastal conditions and in northern New Zealand is common on pohutukawa at s.l. Known also from North and South America, Europe, Asia, Taiwan, South Africa and Australia (Tibell 1987, 2001b; Kalb 1991, 2001c; Sparrius et al. 2002a; Aptroot 2002e; McCarthy 2003c, 2006; Tibell & Thor 2003).

Calicium hyperelloides is characterised by: its greenish yellow, C+ orange thallus, and the medium-sized, epruinose or slightly white-pruinose apothecia.
