S: Canterbury (Castle Hill Basin, Cave Stream, Weka Pass, Montserrat near Omihi, NW of Motunau Beach, Milford), Otago (Duntroon). On limestone rocks.

Rinodina nigricans is characterised by: the saxicolous (basicolous habit); the dark grey-brown to blackish brown, granular, warted to areolate thallus; lecanorine apothecia; Bicincta -type ascospores, 15–19 × 8–11 μm.
