Degelia periptera

Lectotype: New Zealand. Sine loco [probably near Auckland], 1867, Charles Knight s.n. – H-NYL 30378 [fide Galloway (1985a: 334)].
Description : Flora (1985: 334 – as Pannaria periptera); Jørgensen & James (1990: 274–275); Jørgensen & Galloway (1992b: 252).
Chemistry : TLC−, all reactions negative.
K: (Raoul I.). N: Northland (Three Kings Is, Radar Bush, Rakitu I.), Auckland (Rangitoto I.), South Auckland (Great Mercury I., Red Mercury I., Hunua Ra.). Mainly coastal on trees and shrubs. Often on bark of Metrosideros excelsa and commonly associating with the lichens Coccocarpia erythroxyli, Leioderma pycnophorum, Pannaria elixii, Pseudocyphellaria aurata and Usnea rubicunda. Also known from a single collection in New South Wales (Jørgensen & James 1990: 275; Jørgensen & Galloway 1992b: 252; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Degelia periptera is characterised by: the narrow, stellate–radiating or fan-shaped lobes; crowded central apothecia with a pale proper margin bounded by a thick, crenulate–striate thalline margin.
