Graphis inquinata (C.Knight & Mitt.) Hook.f.

Lectotype (fide Hayward, loc. cit., p. 571): New Zealand, Sine loco. ?Auckland. Charles Knight 281, BM!

Thallus crustose, yellow-brown, thick, continuous and roughened. Lirellae deeply immersed, flexuous and branching, visible from the surface as a thin, brown stain, 0.1-0.4 × 0.2 mm, proper exciple present as black, carbonised lips above the hymenium, colourless at sides and base. Ascospores uniseriate, 8 per ascus, 4-locular, 8-9 × 21-22 µm. Chemistry: Stictic acid.

N: Known only from the type collection.

Endemic

G. inquinata is close to G. triticea Nyl., and further collections may show that the two species are synonymous. As represented by the type collection G. inquinata is distinguished by the black, carbonised lips of the proper exciple, the thinner spore walls and the absence of surface fissures.
