Megalaria subcarnea is characterised by: the corticolous habit; the olive-green or greenish brown, granular–furfuracous, rather depauperate thallus; biatorine, waxy, convex apothecia, 0.2–1.0 mm diam., disc pale orange-red to pinkish, epruinose; and fusiform ellipsoidal ascospores, 10–12 × 1.5–2 μm. It is a characteristic but easily overlooked species occurring on the bark of southern rata (Metrosideros umbellata) in association with Coenogonium luteum.
