Gentiana

ζGentiana L.

ζGentiana L. ζGentians indigenous to N.Z. have usually been treated in Gentiana sens. lat., although cytological and chemical evidence suggest greater affinity with Gentianella sens. lat.. However, as noted by Philipson, W. R., in Munty, Y. S. et al. (Eds) Advances in Plant Morphology, 417-422 (1972), the generic placement of the southern white-flowered gentians is not easily resolved. This southern group may warrant recognition as a separate genus and in taking this approach Löve A., Taxon 32: 511 (1983), has published combinations for several N.Z. spp. in Oreophylax. At present the adoption of Gentianella or Oreophylax would be premature. A number of spp. of Gentiana sens. strict. are widespread in cultivation in N.Z.
