Heterodermia microphylla

H. microphylla (Kurok.) Swinscow & Krog, Lichenologist 8 (2): 132 (1976).

Anaptychia hypoleuca var. microphylla Kurok., J. Jap. Bot. 34: 123 (1959).

Description : Flora (1985: 184).

Chemistry : Atranorin and zeorin.

N: Northland (Whangarei, Warkworth). On bark of trees and shrubs in parks, gardens and roadside verges. Known also from India, Thailand, China, Japan, East and South Africa, Zimbabwe, Papua New Guinea and Australia (Kurokawa 1962; Yoshimura 1974; Swinscow & Krog 1976b, 1988; Chen & Wang 2001; Becker 2002; Wolseley et al. 2002; McCarthy 2003c, 2006; Moberg 2004a).

Western Pacific

Illustrations : Kurokawa (1959a: 118, fig. 3 – as Anaptychia hypoleuca var. microphylla); Yoshimura (1974: pl. 3, fig. 8 – as Anaptychia microphylla).

Heterodermia microphylla is characterised by: the corticolous habit; marginal phyllidia; a non-corticate lower surface; and a chemistry of atranorin and zeorin. H. appendiculata is similar but has norstictic acid in the medulla and has longer ascospores.
