Pyrenula deprimens is characterised by: the corticolous habit; the greyish white to pale olive-grey, smooth, minutely maculate (×10 lens) thallus, developed in irregular patches, 1–5 cm diam., not delimited by a prothallus; solitary (rarely 2-together), applanate to hemispherical, black perithecia, with large ostioles with a distinct black rim; and citriform, 3-septate ascospores, 27–32(–36) × 12–15.5 μm.
