Aleurites fordii

ζ*A. fordii Hemsley

ζ*A. fordii Hemsley ζ*, tung-oil tree, has been collected only twice, from Te Paki Station (North Cape) and a coastal scenic reserve near Whangarei. A small tree; young twigs and lvs clothed in mostly simple or simple and stellate hairs; mature lvs entire, (5)-10-30 cm long; fls white with red or orange veins; fr. glabrous, long-beaked, c. 3-4 cm diam. Tung-oil tree is cultivated in warmer parts of N.Z. and was formerly grown extensively in an unsuccessful oil production venture [ see, Burns, M. M. and Taylor, N. H., A Survey of the Tung Groves in New Zealand (1939)]. Poisonous (Connor 1977). Trees may persist from old plantings. (C. Asia, 1981).
