ζ*Macfadyena unguis-cati (L.) A. Gentry ζ*, cat's claw, has been collected wild once in wasteland (CHR 58718, Napier, Healy, 12.4.1945). A liane; lvs composed of 2 normal leaflets and a terminal tendril with 3 branches forming claw-like hooks. Fls solitary or paired. Calyx very slightly lobed. Corolla golden yellow with orange lines in throat, funnelform-campanulate; limb moderately zygomorphic, to c. 9 cm diam. Capsules freely produced, to c. 40 cm long, linear. It is being increasingly grown to cover fences, walls, etc. Plants are self-fertile, unlike most bignoniaceous lianes in N.Z., so the sp. is more likely to occur wild.It has been previously known as Doxantha unguis-cati. (Tropical America, 1966).
