The type of M. cockayniana is from the upper Awatere Valley, W 2603 "Shingle-slip on Shingly Range at 1450 m. alt. L. Cockayne 27 Dec. 1911"; this gathering, represented also in Herb. Cockayne, is at a very early stage of flowering, and Petrie therefore was uncertain about the scales on the corolla-tube, and described the infl. as strongly congested and sunk amongst uppermost lvs.
