Xanthoparmelia loxodella

Chemistry : Cortex K−, HNO3+ dark blue-green; medulla K−, C− or C+ slow yellow, KC+ orange-red. Pd−, UV−; containing glomelliferic, glomellic and loxodellic acids.

N: Wellington (Waipakahi Valley, Kaimanawa Ra., Tongariro National Park, Taranaki Falls). S: Otago (Otago Heads, Lamb Hill, Green Island Bush). On rocks. Also in Australia (Elix 1994k; Kantvilas et al. 2002; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Xanthoparmelia loxodella is the most common isidiate species of brown Xanthoparmelia in Australasia. It is characterised by: the saxicolous habit; the loosely to moderately adnate thallus, the black lower surface becoming dark-brown at lobe apices, cylindrical isidia, and glomelliferic, glomellic and loxodellic acids in the medulla.
