Xanthoparmelia loxodella is the most common isidiate species of brown Xanthoparmelia in Australasia. It is characterised by: the saxicolous habit; the loosely to moderately adnate thallus, the black lower surface becoming dark-brown at lobe apices, cylindrical isidia, and glomelliferic, glomellic and loxodellic acids in the medulla.
