Description : Flora (1985: 309 – as Neofuscelia squamans).
Chemistry : Cortex K−, HNO3+ dark blue-green; medulla K+ yellow-red, C−, KC+ red, Pd+ orange, UV−; containing four unidentified compounds related to stictic and norstictic acids.
S: Canterbury (Banks Peninsula S of Akaroa), Otago (Lindis River near Cluden, Alexandra, Coronet Peak). Alpine or subalpine on rock. Occasionally on soil, 80 – 1500 m. Known also from Argentina, Chile and South Africa (Esslinger 1977b: 145; Galloway & Quilhot 1999; Adler & Calvelo 2002).

Xanthoparmelia squamans is characterised by: the saxicolous habit; the appressesd, subpulvinate thallus; the dark-brown to black, rhizinate lower surface; and the K+ medullary reaction.
