Arthonia nigrocincta

A. nigrocincta C.Knight & Mitt., Trans. Linn. Soc. 23: 106 (1860).

Lectotype: New Zealand. Sine loco [probably Auckland], 1858, Charles Knight 292 – BM [fide Galloway (1985a: 12)].

Description : Flora (1985: 12).

N: ?Auckland. Known only from the type collection.

Arthonia nigrocincta is characterised by: the corticolous habit; the pale greyish yellow to dull whitish, smooth, glossy to roughened or cracked, mosaic-forming thallus, delimited by a thin, black prothallus; round to oblong, sessile to innate, brown-black apothecia; and obovate, 4-septate ascospores, the end cell largest.
