Lectotype: New Zealand. ["Lord Auckland's Group"], Auckland Is, 1844, J.D.Hooker 1569 – BM [fide Ahti et al. (1990: 175)]. Isolectotype – FH-TAYLOR (Ahti et al. 1990: 175; Ahti 1993: 93).

Cladonia gracilisγchordalis *campbelliana. Lectotype: New Zealand. Campbell Island, 1874, Filhol – TUR-V 17645 [fide Ahti (1980b: 238))]. Isolectotypes – BM, H-NYL 39328, PC, PC-HUE, TUR-V 17644.

Description : Flora (1985: 106 – as Cladonia campbelliana). See also Stenroos (1993: 324).

Chemistry : Cortex K−, C−, KC−, Pd+ red; containing fumarprotocetraric acid (major) and protocetraric acid (tr.).

S: Southland (Doubtful Sound). A: C: On dead or decayed wood. Still very poorly known in New Zealand. Also in SE Australia, Tasmania, Macquarie I., Marion I., Kerguelen, the Antarctic Penisula islands, Chile and Argentina (Ahti et al. 1990; Stenroos & Ahti 1990; Archer 1992b; Stenroos 1993; Øvstedal & Gremmen 2001; Øvstedal & Lewis Smith 2001; McCarthy 2003c, 2006; Søchting et al. 2004).

Cladonia sarmentosa is distinguished by: the coarsely squamulose, esorediate and partly ecorticate, thinner and ±straight podetia. It is similar to C. ochrochlora but distinguished by the lack of soredia. It is discussed by Ahti & Kashiwadani (1984 – as C. aspera) and by Stenroos & Ahti (1990) and Stenroos (1993).
