Bromus rubens

ξB. rubens L. ξTufts 12-25 cm. Leaves shortly pubescent. Culm erect, internodes shortly pubescent below panicle. Panicle 3-8 cm, very dense, stiffly erect, fan-shaped; branches pubescent. Spikelets 2.5-3.5 cm. Glumes unequal, acute; lower 6-7 mm, 1-nerved, upper 10-11 mm, 3-nerved. Lemma c. 15 mm, rounded, minutely pubescent with some longer hairs, tipped by 2 finely acuminate lobes, c. 4 mm; awn 20-25 mm. Palea c. ¾ length of lemma. Anthers c. 0.6 mm. A Eurasian species once collected from Camp Russell, McKay's Crossing, 3 miles north of Paekakariki, a small patch on sandy ground near old vehicle park A. J. Healy 9.10.1944 (CHR 47231-4, CHR 47247).
