Euphrasia australis Petrie

Slender, sparingly-branched, annual herb 5-20 cm tall; branches bifariously white-hairy and ± glandular-pilose. Lvs sessile, to 12 × 8 mm, usually ± obovate-cuneate with 2-3 pairs of acute teeth, sometimes almost suborbicular with obtuse teeth, glabrous or with sparse long glandular hairs, sometimes sparsely white-hairy. Fls on pedicels to 10 mm long. Calyx 4-6 mm long, pilose with long glandular hairs and sometimes also white-hairy, divided ?-1/2 way. Corolla white, c. 10-12 mm long. Anthers yellow to golden brown; margins sparsely hairy to glabrous; awns slender, almost equal. Capsule ± = or much < calyx, c. 5-6 × 5 mm.

S.: W. Otago, S. Westland and Fiordland, subalpine to sea level in fiords.

Endemic.

Rocky slopes and grassland, sometimes very moist sites.
