Solenogyne mikadoi
ζ*S. mikadoi (Koidz.) Koidz. ζ* has been collected only once (CHR 33599, Spye Station, N. Canterbury, Healy, 1941) in pasture-tussock grassland. A perennial herb similar to S. gunnii but smaller; lvs pilose on upper surface, almost or quite glabrous on lower, pinnatifid with mostly 2-3 pairs of lobes, c. 10-15 × 3-5 mm; peduncles up to c. 1 cm long at fruiting. This collection was determined as Lagenifera mikadoi by Drury (op. cit.); Adams (op. cit.), however, questioned the identification noting that, compared with the original description and type sheet, a head he examined had too many ray and disc florets, and that the scapes were more numerous, too short and lacked bracts. The N.Z. specimen matches Japanese plants in most characters, but is somewhat larger and more hairy. Japanese material may have numerous, ± naked scapes. The original description gives disc florets c. 3 and ray florets 8 in one series, whereas a sample of 4 heads from the N.Z. material revealed 5-7 disc florets and c. 40 ray florets in several series. However, these values are not inconsistent with the range of values found in Japanese plants. (Ryukyu Is, 1974).
