Armeria maritima
ζ*Armeria maritima (Miller) Willd. ζ*, thrift, is a very common garden plant and has been collected wild behind a beach in Tasman Bay, Nelson. Since it is often grown in coastal gardens it can be expected to escape elsewhere, because it is naturally a coastal sp. A tufted perennial forming large mats of short stout stems and densely arranged linear lvs. Infl. scape up to 20 cm long; capitulum 1.5-1.7 cm diam.; corolla pink, persistent. Sheath of bracts 10-15 mm long; bracts, bracteoles and calyx ± silvery scarious, persistent. (Europe, Greenland, N. America, Chile, 1988).
