ζSicyos L. ζ Allan (1961) treated the indigenous mawhai as S. angulata L. Sykes, W. R. (in Connor, H. E. and Edgar, E., New Zealand J. Bot. 25: 134 (1987)), suggested that N.Z. plants should be referred to S. australis Endl.
