Aster amellus

ζ*A. amellus L.

ζ*A. amellus L. ζ*, Italian aster, has been collected only once, from a small patch beside a railway, Timaru, in 1944. Perennial; stems erect, up to 70 cm tall, scabrid all round; mid cauline lvs obovate, entire, densely scabrid, up to c. 90 × 25 mm; involucral bracts hairy and ciliate, the outer shorter, spathulate and obtuse to subacute, the inner membranous and coloured; capitula 40-50 mm diam. Blue, red, white and purple forms are cultivated, although the sp. is not grown as often as formerly. (S. Europe, 1988).
