Chaenothecopsis sagenidii
Holotype: New Zealand. South Island, Otago, 15 km WNW of Owaka, Catlins Forest, along Catlins River, S of the junction with Chloris Stream, 46º25's, 169º27'E, c. 150 m, in Nothofagus menziesii forest along river, in still corticated parts of decaying stump of N. menziesii, 11.i.1981, L. Description : On thallus and apothecia of Sagenidium molle. Apothecia short, 0.28–0.48 mm tall, with a short stalk. Capitulum lenticular to hemispherical, matt, often irregular in shape, 0.20–0.28 mm diam. Stalk dull black, paler towards base, 0.04–0.08 mm diam., of periclinally arranged hyphae 2 μm diam; in section medium-brown in outer parts, paler centrally, of irregularly intertwined, thin hyphae, 1 μm wide. Epithecium, thin, pale, Hypothecium medium-brown, 85–95 μm thick. Exciple of 5–6 layers of periclinally arranged hyphae, or of more densely aggregated, intertwined hyphae, 11–14 μm thick. Asci cylindrical, 38–43 × 2.2–3.3 μm, apex thickened and penetrated by a narrow canal. Ascospores medium-brown, ellipsoidal, smooth, 1-septate, 6.5–8.3 × 2.2–3.3 μm.
S: Otago (Catlins), Southland (near Clifden, Longwood Ra.). On thalli and apothecia of Sagenidium molle at base of old trunks of Nothofagus menziesii in shaded forest sites, 130–600 m. Also in Tasmania (Tibell 1987: 151; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

* Chaenothecopsis sagenidii is characterised by its short-stalked apothecia, the wide capitula, the frequently pale base of the stalks, the 1-septate spores with distinct septum and the K−, H− apothecia.
