Chaenotheca Th.Fr.,
Type : Chaenotheca trichialis (Ach.) Th.Fr. [=Calicium trichiale Ach.]
Description : Flora (1985: 85).
Key
Chaenotheca, included in the family Conicybaceae (Eriksson et al. 2004; Pennycook & Galloway 2004; Eriksson 2005), is a cosmopolitan genus of some 25 known species (Tibell & Ryan 2004b), the majority inhabiting cool to temperate areas, with only a small number of taxa confined to the tropics. Species occur mainly on bark and wood with only very few growing on soil or siliceous rocks. Most species grow in sheltered habitats with low light intensity and high humidity (Tibell 1983, 1984b, 1985, 1987, 1994, 1996b, 1998a, 1999b; Tibell & Beck 2002; Tibell & Ryan 2004b). Chaenotheca is associated with four different photobiont genera, viz. Dictyochloropsis, Stichococcus, Trebouxia and Trentepohlia (Tibell 2001a; Tibell & Beck 2002). Thirteen species are recorded from New Zealand (Tibell 1987). Anamorphs are so far known only from cultures of the New Zealand species C. deludens (Tibell 1993).
