Chaenotheca confusa

=New Zealand records of Chaenotheca brachypoda (Ach.) Tibell. 

Descriptions : Flora (1985: 145 – as Coniocybe furfuracea); Tibell (1987: 71–72 – as C. brachypoda).

Chemistry : Thallus K−, C−, KC−, Pd−; containing vulpinic acid (constituting greenish yellow pruina).

N: Northland (Herekino Gorge) to Wellington (Ohakune). S: Canterbury (Arthur's Pass, Banks Peninsula, Peel Forest), Otago (Cameron Flat near Makarora, Owaka), Southland (Lake Hauroko, Pourakino Valley). On bark and lignum of Nothofagus menziesii and occasionally on bark of totara, 150–750 m, in shaded, humid habitats. Known also from cool temperate to temperate habitats in the Northern Hemisphere (Eurasia, North America) and in Australia (Tibell 1987, 1999c; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Exsiccati : Tibell (1986: No. 133 – as Chaenotheca brachypoda).

Chaenotheca confusa is characterised by: the yellowish green thallus, the spherical capitula, and the dense yellowish green pruina on the young apothecia and stalks of mature apothecia. Spores are small and medium- to pale-brown.
