Chaenotheca ferruginea

Chemistry : Thallus K−, C−, KC−, Pd−; mazedium K+ dark-red; mazedium containing a quinonoid-type compound and a yellowish, K+ red pigment (Tibell 1987).
N: Gisborne (Mt Honokawa) to Wellington (Ohakune). S: Nelson (Ruby Lake, Lake Rotoiti) to Southland (Pourakino Valley). On lignum of beech, predominantly silver beech; also on lignum of kaikawaka, 130–940 m. A very widespread taxon in temperate to cool temperate regions of both hemispheres; Europe, Scandinavia, North America, Asia, Australia and South America (Tibell 1999c: 34; McCarthy 2003c, 2006; Nimis & Martellos 2003; Hermansson & Pystina 2004; Titov et al. 2004).

Chaenotheca ferruginea is characterised by: the yellow to red, K+ deep-red spots on the thallus. The thallus is greyish except for the pigment-containing spots.
