Epilobium pedunculare var. viride Cockayne

Var. viride Ckn. in T.N.Z.I. 50, 1918, 173.

Stems slender, pale green; lamina oblong to ovate-oblong to suborbicular, remotely and rather obscurely denticulate, up to ± 7 mm. diam. Cockayne says: "pedunculis brevibus 5-11 mm. longis; capsulis circ 2·8 cm. longis; viridibus secundum suturam brunneo tinctis."

The type locality is given as "On river-bed near Fairburn, Mangonui County. H. Carse!" Cockayne adds: "Whether the above variety is identical with the plant originally described by Allan Cunningham I cannot say, for the original description is quite general and would fit almost any variety of the species."

A Carse sheet (BD 11471) from "Mossy rocks, Kaiheriheri Creek, Kaiaka, 26th Oct. 1902, coll. H.C." is labelled by him "Type specimens". There are 6 pieces. Flowering pieces have the fls 3-4 mm. long, capsules 5-8 mm. long; fruiting pieces have the capsules ± 25 mm. long, peduncles ± 6 cm. long. Plants roughly answering Cockayne's description occur throughout both islands, but I have seen no specimens with the mature peduncles so short.
