Phlox subulata

ζ*P. subulata L. ζ*,moss phlox, has been collected wild at Akatarawa, near the Hutt R., where it grew amongst grass on rocks. A mat-forming perennial with slender, prostrate or sprawling stems and sessile, linear-subulate lvs. Fls terminal on slender pedicels; calyces 6-9 mm long, with tube = the linear-lanceolate lobes; corollas variously coloured white, pink to purple (often with a darker eye), with tube 9-10 mm long, the limb 12-18 mm diam., and the lobes emarginate. A very commonly cultivated rock garden and ground covering plant for banks and stone walls. (N. America, 1958).
