Type locality: Hooker Valley. Lectotype: A, No. 4080 "Hooker Valley, Stony flats, 2000 ft. Jan. 1898, T. F. Cheeseman." Endemic.
Plant forming cushion or mat several cm. across. Branches many, very short, very close, each bearing a tuft of erect, us. stiff lvs. Lvs yellowish, narrow-linear, sheath short, blade 10-20 mm. long (reaching 30 mm. In cultivation) tapering gradually into acicular tip that is much longer than width of adjacent part of If. Peduncles barely = lvs, fls sts projecting above. Sepals 5, 4-8 mm. long, broad below with membr. margin, often infolded above, tapering gradually to long acicular tip; capsule 5-valved, much < calyx when mature.
DIST.: N. Ruahine Range, Haurangi (Aorangi) Range. S. East of main divide. Crevices of rock or shingly places, often amongst tussock grasses, sts where almost boggy; especially in mountains, but occ. near sea.
