Var. australis

Var. australis Hook. f. Handbk N.Z. Fl. 1867, 735.

Original localities: "Otago, common on the west coast, Hector and Buchanan. Much stouter than A. Traversii. Leaves broader and flowers larger." Type: K?, not located by me.

Stouter shrubs; lvs 10-20 × 3-4 mm., on short petioles, elliptic-to ovate-oblong, obtuse with calloused apex. Racemes c. 17-20 mm. long, stout, erect, pubescent, 8-12-fld; fls ± 5 mm. long, ± secund. Bracts linear, ± = pedicels, caducous. Calyx-lobes broad-oblong, obtuse, not 1/2 length corolla. Capsule ± 2.5 mm. diam.

DIST.: S. Coastal to subalpine forest, western Otago and Fiordland.

The sp. and var. are linked by numerous forms possibly due to hybridism.
