Fragaria ×ananassa

ζ*F. × ananassa Duchesne

ζ*F. × ananassa Duchesne ζ* (R. chiloensis (L.) Duchesne × R. virginiana Duchesne), strawberry, has been reported as a persistent garden relic in North and South Is and on Campbell Is, and has been collected wild locally at Mt Cook and at Port William (Stewart Is). A low-growing herb forming numerous offsets by long, slender runners; leaflets ± ovate to elliptic or obovate, somewhat coriaceous with upper surface glabrous or with scattered hairs; veins obvious; petiolules 0; fls c. 25-30 mm diam.; sepals up to c. 15 mm long, usually becoming appressed to receptacle after flowering; fr. up to 25-(50) mm diam., juicy when ripe; achenes sunken in receptacle and at most partly projecting. (Cultivated hybrid, 1968).
