Lecidea strobilina

L. strobilina (Sprengel) Kieffer, Bull. Soc. Hist. nat. Metz 19: 74 (1895).

Parmelia strobilina Sprengel, Syst. orb. veg. 4 (1): 300 (1827).

Thallus not well delimited, epiphloeodal, thin, continuous or discontinuous, uneven, rarely with some pulverulent, farinose granules, whitish, whitish-yellow or pale yellowish-green, decorticate, spreading in irregular patches, 2-4(-5) cm diam. Apothecia abundant, to 1 mm diam., generally crowded, at first cupuliform, becoming plane and finally swollen, convex and distorted, disc smooth, greyish-yellow to pale brown, sometimes darker brown in old fruits, margins 0.1-0.2 mm thick, concolorous with thallus, ± granular, excluded at maturity. Epithecium 3-8 µm thick, colourless, often with abundant, colourless, granular crystals. Hymenium 35-65 µm tall. Asci clavate 35-45 × 10-17 µm. Paraphyses 1-1.5 µm thick, simple or sparsely branched, septate, apices not swollen. Ascospores narrowly ellipsoid 10.2-13.6 × 3.4-4.0 µm, slightly curved. Chemistry: K+ yellow, C-. Usnic acid.

N: North Auckland, Little Barrier I., on bark of Metrosideros excelsa (B.W. and G.C. Hayward). On bark of trees in northern coastal habitats, probably more widely distributed in New Zealand.
