Callitriche antarctica Engelm. ex Hegelm.

C. antarctica Engelm. ex Hegel. in Verh. bot. Ver. Brandenb. 9, 1867, 20.

Type locality: Falkland Is. Also in Kerguelen, South Georgia.

Stems slender, creeping, branched, ± succulent, up to ± 15 cm. long, us. forming patches on mud. Lvs on petioles 2-3 mm. long; lamina ± fleshy, 3-6-(10) × 1-2-3 mm., narrow- to oblong-spathulate, rounded at apex. Fr. broad-oblong to suborbicular, ± turgid, 1-1·5 × 1-1·5 mm.; lobes rounded to subacute, commissural groove shallow.

DIST.: Sn., A., C., Ant., M. Common in damp and boggy ground.

The Subantarctic Is plants are being revised by R. Mason, in the light of fresh material. One form shows a distinct wing.
