Scirpus lacustris L.

S. lacustris L. Sp. Pl 1, 1753, 48.

Stoutly rhizomatous. Stems terete, to ± 2 m high. Leaves reduced to loose grey-brown papery basal sheaths. Inflorescence of many red-brown ± ovoid spikelets clustered in an irregular umbel with a longer terete bract.

N., S., Nelson; Marlborough; Westland; Canterbury - near Christchurch. Lowland swamps and on river, lake and pond margins. (Europe, Asia, Africa, America, Malaysia, Australia)

The chair-bottom "rush" of Europe: can be troublesome when in quantity in waterways.
