Gaultheria subcorymbosa Colenso

G. subcorymbosa Col. in T.N.Z.I. 22, 1890, 476.

G. rupestris var. subcorymbosa (Col.) Burtt et Hill loc. cit. 617.

Type locality: "On eastern slopes of Ruahine Mountain-range". Type: W, H. Hill. The specimen at K may be an isotype.

Much-branched, up to c. 1 m. tall; branchlets with few setose hairs. Lvs rather close-set, on stout glab. petioles up to c. 2 mm long. Lamina subcoriac., glab., 15-20-(30) × 5-7-(10) mm., elliptic-oblong, occ. laminae sublanceolate or obovate-oblong, obtuse to subacute, us. apiculate, closely serrulate-crenulate. Racemes ± 4 cm. long, terminal and subterminal. sts branched. forming panicles ± 2.5 cm. diam. Pedicels at first curved, finely pubescent, up to c. 5 mm. long. Bracteoles us. very finely serrulate, broad-ovate, abruptly acute, up to ± 2 mm. long. Calyx rather deeply cut; lobes ± 1·5 mm. long, acute, very minutely serrulate. Corolla glab. within; tube urceolate, c 2.5-3·5 mm. long; lobes very small, recurved, ovate-oblong, obtuse. Style cylindric, ± 2 mm. long; anther-awns distinct, rather stout. Fr. 3-4 mm. diam., invested by enlarged, dry calyx.

DIST.: Lowland to montane grassland, shrubland, open and rocky places. N. Ruahine, Tararua, Rimutaka ranges. S. Aorere Valley, Nelson.

FL. 11-1 FT. 12-3.

Burtt and Hill (loc. cit. 619) describe the lvs as "oblong-lanceolate (in the specimens near Wellington), or elliptic-lanceolate (in those from the Ruahine and Tararua Mountains)."

G. glandulosa Col. in T.N.Z.I. 28, 1896, 600, from "Ruahine Mountain-range, east side: Mr. H. Hill, 1894; Mr. E.W. Andrews, 1895:, is described as having the calyx-margins "glandular ciliolate", the bracteole-margins "glandular-ciliolate'' or serrate (sub lens)". I have not found specimens so named in Colenso's herb. at W. There is one good piece at K. G. calycina Col. in T.N.Z.I. 31, 1899, 274, from "Ruahine Mountain-range, east side; 1898, Mr. A. Olsen" is described as having the calyx "rather large, inflated, pale-green, 5-lobed; lobes ovate, acute, thin, margins entire". I have found no specimens so labelled in Colenso's herb. at W. Burtt and Hill (loc. cit. 617), probably correctly, place Colenso's names as absolute synonyms of G. subcorymbosa.

Burtt and Hill (loc. cit. 617) refer to G. subcorymbosa a specimen in K from "Aorere Valley, Nelson, Dec. 1861, Travers 1," A specimen collected in the same locality in 1924 by F.G. Gibbs has laminae elliptic to elliptic-to obovate-oblong, 15-20 × 5-8 mm., serrulate-crenulate, apiculate. Racemes ± 4 cm. long, terminal and subterminal. The distribution in S. needs further study.
