Liatris spicata

ζ*Liatris spicata (L.) Willd.

ζ*Liatris spicata (L.) Willd. ζ*, gay feather, has been collected only once, as a casual in a garden in Pukekohe (Auckland). A glabrous perennial with simple stems arising annually from a stout rootstock; lvs alternate, apetiolate, simple, linear, entire, up to 10 cm long; capitula purple, sessile in dense terminal spikes opening acropetally; involucral bracts unequal; pappus of barbellate hairs. A garden escape; a form with white capitula is also cultivated. (E. and C. U.S.A., 1988).
