Pertusaria ascripta. Lectotype: New Zealand. Near Wellington, J. Buchanan, rec'd 13.ix.1876 – GLAM [fide Galloway (1985a: 381)].

Pertusaria fumosa. Type: New Zealand. Sine loco, Charles Knight – WELT not seen.

Pertusaria cupularis. Holotype: New Zealand. Sine loco [probably Wellington], Charles Knight – WELT [Herb. Knight Vol. 32, p. 15]. Isotype – M, ex Herb. Arnold.

Pertusaria subglobulifera. Lectotype: New Zealand. Sine loco, W. Colenso 4543 – BM [fide Galloway (1985a: 381)].

Pertusaria nothofagi. Lectotype: New Zealand. Otago, Silver Peaks near Dunedin, x.1933 [not "April 1934" as in Flora (1985: 377)], on Nothofagus menziesii, J.S. Thomson T1217 [ZA 281] – W [fide Galloway (1985a: 377)]. Isolectotypes – CHR 374716, OTA 47292.

Chemistry : Medulla and apices of verrucae K+ dull orange-yellow, C−, KC+ pink or violet, Pd−; containing picrolichenic acid (major), isohyperpicrolichenic acid (major), hyperpicrolichenic acid (minor) and subpicrolichenic acid (minor) (Archer 1997: 213).

N: Gisborne (Waikaremoana), South Auckland (Waiotapu Valley), Wellington (Tongariro National Park, Ruahine Ra., Tararua Ra.). S: Nelson (Maruia Springs), Marlborough (Tophouse), Westland (Barrack Creek near Otira), Canterbury (Lewis Pass, Nina Valley, Arthur's Pass, Rhodes's Bush, Banks Peninsula, Governor's Bush Mt Cook National Park) Otago (Canyon Creek, Ahuriri Valley, Haast Pass, Makarora, Young Valley, Forgotten River, Bride Burn, Theatre Flats Rockburn, Silver Peaks), Southland (Homer, Caswell Sound, Stuart Mts). St: On bark of trees and shrubs in lowland to subalpine forest. Commonly on species of Nothofagus but also on Dracophyllum, Leptospermum, Metrosideros, Podocarpus spicatus, Weinmannia racemosa. Also in Victoria and Tasmania in Australia (Kantvilas 1990b; Archer 1997, 2004a: 167; McCarthy 2003c, 2006).

Pertusaria truncata is characterised by: the corticolous habit; disc-like apothecia; (4–6–)8-spored asci; uniseriate, ellipsoidal, smooth ascospores, 19–27 × 12–15 μm; and the presence of picrolichenic acid (medulla KC+ pink-violet). It is superficially similar to P. novaezelandiae, but is distinguished from that species by ascospore numbers and by chemistry; P. novaezelandiae has 1-spored asci and hypothamnolic acid (medulla and soredia K+ purple).
