Herbertineae R.M.Schust.
Jungermanniales suborder Herbertineae R.M.Schust., J. Hattori Bot. Lab. 26: 231. 1963.
The Herbertineae include three regional families and, probably, also the Grolleaceae (Solari) R.M.Schust. of southern South America (cf. Schuster, 1973, 1984e; Solari, 1974). Recognition of families in the suborder remains controversial. For example, Schuster (1973) placed Grollea R.M.Schust., with only G. antheliopsis R.M.Schust., in the Blepharostomataceae, whereas Hässel (1980a) included the genus in the Antheliaceae, and Schuster (1984c, 2000a) placed it in its own family, Grolleaceae. The suborder is largely southern temperate in range; the Trichotemnomaceae R.M.Schust. are found only in New Zealand, and some genera (all Trichocoleaceae) are exclusively southern temperate, i.e., Archeochaete R.M.Schust. (southern South America, Falkland Islands), Archeophylla, Eotrichocolea (both New Zealand), Herzogiaria Fulford (southern South America) and Isophyllaria (Australasia, southern South America). Some genera have a number of tropical-montane representatives, e.g., Herbertus and Trichocolea, both of which also have one species each in eastern North America.
