SHERARDIA L.

Prostrate or semi-prostrate annual herb, with 4-angled stems. Lvs and leaflike stipules similar, in whorls of 4-6, sessile. Fls small, usually ⚥, possibly sometimes unisexual, few, in small terminal heads surrounded by 8-10 involucral bracts. Calyx 4-6-lobed; lobes appearing as distinct sepals, persistent. Corolla 4-lobed, funnelform. Stamens 4, short and < corolla lobes. Ovary 2-celled; ovules 1 per cell; style 2-fid with unequal branches; stigmas capitate. Fr. dry, of 2, 1-seeded mericarps, hairy.
