APTENIA N. E. Br.

Prostrate perennial fleshy herbs. Lvs opposite, petiolate, flat, papillate; papillae not glittering. Fls solitary, terminal but soon overtopped by subapical shoots, pedicellate, ebracteate. Sepals 4: 2 large and foliaceous, 2 smaller and horn-like. Petals numerous, < sepals, very shortly united at base; stamens numerous; staminodes present, attached to corolla-tube. Placentation axile. Stigmas 4, lanceolate. Capsule 4-locular; valves broad; expanding keels contiguous; wings 0; locules without lids; placental tubercle 0. Seeds compressed, circular, tuberculate.
