Cuscuta europaea
ζ*C. europaea L. ζ*, large dodder, has been recorded from Ashburton County and was almost certainly collected in the Wairarapa in 1949. Annual with stems typically to 1 mm thick; infl. glomerules > 10 mm diam.; staminal scales very short and thus much < corolla tube; corolla lobes ± obtuse; styles and stigmas < ovary at anthesis. In Europe C. europaea generally parasitises the genera Urtica and Humulus but the Wairarapa specimen was on Calystegia sepium. (Temperate Eurasia, N. Africa, 1904).
