Var. stricta.

Var. stricta.

Veronica salicifolia var. stricta (Benth.) Hook. f. Fl. N.Z. 1, 1854, 191.

Hebe salicifolia var. stricta (Benth.) Ckn. et Allan in T.N.Z.I. 57, 1926, 17.

Original localities: "ad ostium flum. Thames et juxta Auckland". Type: BM, Sinclair.

Diffusely branched shrub to 4 m. tall. Lvs c. 5-10-(12) cm. long, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, subcoriac., not shining, evenly narrowed to base and tip or ± acuminate. Bracts and calyx-lobes pubescent all over, style and upper part of ovary us. pubescent. Capsules us. ± pendent.

DIST.: N. Common in lowland and submontane areas, mostly on banks, from c. lat. 40° 30' northwards.

H. parkinsoniana (Col.) Ckn. in T.N.Z.I. 60, 1929, 472.  Veronica parkinsoniana Col. in T.N.Z.I. 21, 1889, 97. Type locality: "Edges of thickets, country south of Dannevirke, County of Waipawa; 1888: W. C." No plant so labelled has been seen but Colenso's very detailed description leaves little doubt that it belongs here; an un-named Dannevirke specimen in Herb. Colenso (W 5318) has smaller lvs than those described ("4 in.-5 in. long, 3/4 in. broad") but undoubtedly belongs to var. stricta, which is still common in that district.

H. salicifolia var. longiracemosa (Ckn.) Ckn. et Allan in T.N.Z.I. 57, 1926, 18.  Veronica salicifolia var. longiracemosa Ckn. in T.N.Z.I. 49, 1917, 61 non V. longiracemosa Col. in T.N.Z.I. 20, 1888, 203 [ = V. arvensis] nec Petrie in T.N.Z.I. 49, 1917, 52. Type locality: "on steep bank at outskirts of forest, Moumahaki (Egmont-Wanganui bot. dist, of N.Z.) lowland belt". Type: K, L. Cockayne, March 1916, No. 8163; this sheet, A 8119 and another isotype in CM are all marked "Type" by Cockayne. Cockayne compares this lowland Taranaki plant with " var. communis" [H. salicifolia sens. strict.] of South Id, but not with var. stricta from which it is not easily separable.

Though var. stricta has not been recorded from South Id several specimens from Marlborough Sounds and Nelson suggest that it may be found there.
